The Loneliness Epidemic and the Power of Human Connection

The Mental Health Town Hall is a community event focused on understanding the growing crisis of loneliness and social isolation and exploring how connection and belonging can be rebuilt across families, workplaces, schools, and communities.

Research shows that chronic loneliness and social isolation can be as harmful to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and significantly increase the risk of early death. Loneliness is now recognized as one of the most urgent public health challenges of our time, impacting mental, physical, and emotional well-being across all ages.

This town hall brings together leading researchers, mental health professionals, and community advocates to explore why loneliness is increasing, how it affects individuals and society, and what practical steps can be taken to strengthen connection and protect mental health.

The event features a keynote address from Dr. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, one of the world’s leading authorities on loneliness, social connection, and health. Her work has shaped global public health policy and informed the U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on Social Connection.

Additional speakers include Brandy Vega, Founder of Promise2Live, sharing how real connection and community save lives; Dr. Dave Morgan, addressing how loneliness impacts mental health and warning signs families and leaders should recognize; and James Brown, Founder of Living With Pride, offering perspective on belonging, identity, aging, and connection across the lifespan.
